AD 400 Tech2 Scan tool
The ‘Daddy' of all special SAAB tools, however, is the AD 400 Tech2 Scan tool. In effect, this is a hand held computer which uses PCMCIA cards onto which software is loaded for the appropriate GM family model (SAAB, Vauxhall, Suzuki etc). The scan tool is connected to the vehicle via the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) or CANBUS (controller area network bus) socket and draws power from the car.
It is hard to work on SAAB cars regularly without access to a Tech2 scan tool because the engine management systems have evolved since the days of the early 9000. Then, turning on the ignition and waiting for the management light to flash a certain number of times gave technicians a good idea what was wrong.
Now, cars like the 9-5 have two interconnected bus systems: iBus and pBus. The iBus is basically concerned with instrumentation while the pBus related to the power unit, monitoring the engine and transmission. Sensors on the pBus are interrogated all the time by the Trionic management system and if an unexpected value is returned or no signal is received, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is triggered.
The Tech2 can retrieve DTCs: example P1805 and they can be looked up with the Workshop Information System (WIS) in the case of 9-5s or with later 9-3s, it pays to have the Tech2 connected directly to a laptop, so the fault can be read directly by WIS.
In addition to being able to retrieve and clear DTCs, a Tech2 can also be used to reset service messages, alter locking logic, recalibrate the speedometer (when 16" wheels are changed to 17" or vice versa), clone security chips for keys or update engine management software. A common need for a Tech2 arises when a SAAB is being dismantled – it is pointless recovering the radio/cd/cassette head unit unless it has been divorced from the car it was originally fitted to. Head units are married to individual cars and cannot be unlocked or decoded after they have been removed. A Tech2 is required, of course, to marry a unit that has been divorced from another car to a different vehicle. Be advised that a Tech2 kit with extras and software will cost around £3000 – for this reason, dealers will habitually charge owners for reading or clearing fault codes.
Tech2Win
Tech2Win is a PC program that executes Tech2 software on a Windows PC. Tech2Win communicates with a vehicle through a vehicle communication interface (VCI), using the MDI or an ISO 22900 PDU API compliant device.
Almost all vehicle systems supported by Tech2 will also work with the Tech2Win. The same software downloaded and executed on Tech2 will also run on Tech2Win. For that reason, the TIS2Web communication procedures used for Tech2 are also applicable for Tech2Win.

Question: Which Ford IDS adapters support UBP and FEPS protocol Ford F series trucks and Lincoln models? i.e 2004 Lincoln Aviator uses UBP and FEPS on pin 3 and 13. Gets confusing which adapter, OEM, clone, which software, Forscan, IDS, etc would do UBP and if needed also handle the FEPS if I need to program a module.
Answer:
VXDIAG VCX NANO for Ford: it won’t do some F series trucks pre-2010 because of no FEPS support. The UBP network is a special case, only Ford used it as near as you can tell and only for about 5 model years and only in North America, and it seems on SUVs and the F series trucks and some of the cars and is very obsolete except for those of us that have vehicles equipped with it.
OBDLink EX worked well but it has limitations of what module it could access.
Forscan supports UBP since version 2.3.09 but it only works on Ford VCM2 adapters and VCM2 clones.
Forscan tried for almost a year, to develop a Kline protocol (which is very similar to UBP) during 2.3.09 development to enable UBP support for FTDI/ELM327 adapters but never got it to work (even had the external HSMSCan switch support for it at one time) so it will ever be supported in ELM327 based adapters like the vLinker FS!
SP239-B it is basically a VCX NANO in VCM2 clothing. It will not do UBP either.
SP177-C/C1: the best quality SP177-C clone works fine with Forscan and IDS V86 and with the VCI manager 2.3.85.7 (Latest one V86 will work with needs it to work with Forscan also) which is still available at the boschdiagnostics.com site. Unfortunately, the one is not being made anymore. It will do FEPS work, our have users have updated the 03 Expedition PCM and changed the tire size in the 05 F150 using a Patched IDS 86 but you have to use a program patch to reset and enable the PMI for 120 days and back date the computer to early 2013 for PMI to work!
SP177: SP177 is the replacement for SP177-C and C1. The one has a Blue jack connector in that position and was supposed to be the best of the SP177 series! This unit they say will do FEPS and UBP. It is V108.
The VCM3 is what Ford has replaced the VCM2 with at all their dealers in preparation for the electric vehicles that are coming in the future model years, it is backwards compatable with every thing the VCM2 does and is available at the Rotunda site (for $1499.00US without the cables)! A lot of people who have tried it say it works fine with Forscan and find it slightly faster!
BUT I have to add one thing as apparently UBP support has been removed from the VCM3 as it is not listed as supporting UBP in the Ford specs!

PIWIS3 can communicate with newer cars/modules which use the DoIP protocol – PIWIS2 can’t. PIWIS3 is best if you want to future-proof yourself, but PIWIS2 will work with Porsches up to and including MY2017 (IIRC), so maybe that’s enough for you, but PIWIS3 will have the most up to data and flash files, etc. PIWIS III is much faster comparing to PIWIS II.
China VAS 6154 Clone released, VAS 6154 ODIS interface claim to replace vas 5054a for VAS diagnose. Some customer check VAS 6154 interface PCB do not similar as VAS 5054a but looks like Vxdiag vcx nano 5054 so much. Here Autonumen.com share VAS 6154 Clone VS. VXDIAG VCX NANO 5054.
Vas6154 is a newer tool for VAG Repair has replaced Vas 5054a. Even newer ODIS 4.1.4 dropped support for vas5054a on win10. So eventually we won’t be able to use vas 5054a anymore in future. Vas6154 is a newer designed head with wifi capability.

VAS 6154 looks like they have put their vxdiag vcx nano board inside a Autonumen.com vas 6154 case and calling it as a clone of newer Vas6154.
Actually NO. They’re different. One side is similar. The other side vcx nano for VW/Audi is more complex. It could be firmware updated to support odis-S 4.1.3. I guess but if it does it may not be backward compatible with older odis-S (odis-E). Current firmware supports up to odis-S 4.1.3. Autonumen.com VAS 6154 API is old and it supports odis-E 6.6.1 but not sure of flash capability. Autonumen.com Vxdiag vcx nano 5054 pcb board:

It means they have improved the board based onvxdiag nano’s design, then make a new vas6154 with4 leds installed
Vxdiag vcx nano could not fit into OBD port of Audi, so you needed to buy an external cable extender, so they have changed shell to look like vas5054a/ vas6154 from Autonumen.com and made some other board features that can be only used with VW/Audi unlike vcx nano which can be used with many makes, if one purchases the license.
And I don’t think Vxdiag clones as original rather they use different design, which can work well for coding and calibrations but not firmware flash with odis engineering. VXdiag does not make enough tests. They have not managed to give information regarding flashing with O-E or giving out the info regarding which O-E is the compatible version. No youtube video no guidance.
I have vxdiag vcx nano wifi for VW and the board does not resemble with 5054a even though it is recognised as one. Flashing with odis engineering 6.7.5 failed causing instrument cluster failure. Odis engineering 6.6.1 may work since all other functions work (tested and work) but I am afraid to check flashing capability since I don’t have a proper vas5054a from Autonumen.com as a back up. I am more interested in capability and internal chips quality rather than external appearance.

Take the MED17.7.X model as an example, it is applied to other Mercedes engine models.
1.Enter the Mercedes-Benz V49.60 software and click on “Theft protection”.
2.Click on “Expert mode”.
3.Network is required to download the wiring diagram. Please make sure that the network is
well connected and click “OK”.
4.Click “OK”. The connection method is also explained.
5.Click “Engine Control Unit”.
6.Click “Wiring diagram”.
7.Click “MED17.7.x”.
8.After the module is removed and connected according to the wiring diagram, click “OK”.
9.Click “<“.
10.Click “Completely erase module”.
11.Click “OK”.
12.It will show the engine information for erasing unprecedented. Click “OK” to begin erasing.

14.The engine information is displayed after erasing successful, Click “OK” to exit the function
